trans not shifting right and speedo not reading

Hey guys im new to the forum and this is my first post. I have a 95 f250 psd e40d with 275,000 mi.completely stock no mods and my trans shifts hard sometimes and sometimes its fine almost like it doesnt know when to shift. My speedo also bounces around and wont read the correct speed. Im pretty sure the speedo reads off the trans so could my instrument cluster be making my trans act up and shift funny? Looking for any insight or help as to what could be the problem. thanks

I believe you have a VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) in the rear differential. If so, that will cause the problems you're describing if it's bad.

speedo reads off hte Vss in the rear end. 5 min job to change it out, it bolts on the top of the rear end. be sure you clean the surface good before you remove the old one so you do not get any junk in the rear end.
