Whats wrong with this E40D?

My brother has got a 1996 F350 with an E40D that doesnt want to move. With the truck running he can put it into any gear (forward and reverse) and the truck will only lurch an inch or so in any direction after throttling up a bit. Also the O/D light will flash. This happened almost suddenly, he pulled into a gas station just fine, shut the truck off, came back out and it wouldnt move. Has anyone ran into this?

Multiple causes. all internal.

that's what happened to my tranny before it was declared toasted!
