97' Auto trans stuck in park

I just purchased a 1997 f250 4x4 auto, and was pullin the gooseneck today and jumped in to move it out of the middle of the road, and it was stuck in Park. I ended up taking a 15mm wrench to the nut where the shift cable ends and putting it in gear, but while in the process broke the shifter cable. I assume that i just need to replace the shifter cable, but anyone have any Idea why this happened all of a sudden??

Sounds like the trans shift lever interlock is not working, you can get under there and unplug it. are the brake lights working?
