Hello all,
Just brought home a 95' PSD with 5 sp manual. On the way home (towing a small auto) after everything warmed up, I started smelling manual gear lube (hypoid) really bad. (so bad I had to roll down the windows.) No drips???Any Ideas???? Thanks, Clark |

Help infor
What going on. I see that you had done some towing and after the tow or during the tow you had smelt some burning fluid coming from the truck. I would check the rear diff, and trans fluid, and while I was under the truck I would check the transfer case fluid also. While you are check the fluid try to get a sample to look at and see if anything is burnt on the fluid. The rear diff takes rear oil can not remember the grade. The transfer case takes mercon III and the tranny takes mercon V. Also look to see if you have any chunks of clutch in the little cover plate. I think those bolts are 7/16. How many miles are on the truck? I hope this information helps take it easy

I checked the main drain on the tranny and it is ATF of some kind.
Just can't figure out where this powerful hypoid smell is coming from. If it is coming from the rear end, then why do I smell it when moving? 95 PSD 118k miles. 5 speed manual. |

Try this
Look at the center support bearing. There is alot of grease on that support. If it is going dry then that might be the location of the burning oil smell.
