So I just traded for a '97 2wd 5 speed that is in pretty good shape, but I am having a weird issue I cant wrap my head around. When I am driving at say 2000 rpm in 5th (58-60 mph), after about a mile, I get this weird rattle and drone sound that appears to be in time with the turbo. If I accelerate, it goes away and everything sounds perfect. If I drive around town and dont keep it up that high for that long, it doesnt happen. I also notice it when I turn to the right pretty sharply or when the truck leans to the left. The sound seems to be coming from exactly where the turbo is, and I can feel the rattle in the floorboards.
One buddy said it is probably the turbo down pipe not having enough clearance and needing adjusting, and another said it is probably the up pipes' ceramic donut gaskets being blown.
Was just hoping to get some more advice before I tear into this turbo since this is my first diesel, and I know about enough to get myself in trouble lol. Thanks!
