Unhappy PLEASE HELP: can't start truck

Today my truck decided it randomly wasn't going to start. I had to leave it parked for the night and get a ride home. I had driven it around all day without any issues at all. I stopped by the bank to get money and then walked next door to pick up pizza. I then went to start the truck and nothing. The dash lights came on as did the WTS light, but went to start it made a thud-type sound and nothing else. This starting problem isn't the first time I've had it. This is a thread I posted about it a while ago: Occasional starting issue. Every time that it happened before I just cycled the key a few times and then it started right up. It hasn't happened in over a month so I wasn't really worried about it and I never thought to look into it.

I checked a few things but still don't really know. There was mention of the starter or the solenoid that could be the issue in that past thread. I first tried moving the shifter around (A/T) to see if that was the problem. It makes the sound only in P and N, so I don't believe it has anything to do with that. I tapped the solenoid with a wrench. I had a friend try jumping the solenoid with me turning the key. When it was being jumped, it made the same thud sound but nothing else. Tried tapping on the starter itself before starting and while my friend was trying to start it, but no luck there. Tried jumping the battery (in case it was low) with an F150 while he revved his engine, but still nothing.

Unfortunately if I can't get it started tomorrow, I'll have to get it towed home. Does anyone know what it is for sure or have a temp solution so I could get it started and avoid getting it towed?

Is the CEL on? Does the CEL do anything weird (like rapidly flashing)? Maybe have the batteries checked (independently from each other). You might also have the starter checked as well. Cheers!

No, the engine light isn't on or anything like that.

Check your batteries. Install a new starter.

How old are the batteries? If they're more than a couple years old I would replace them before paying for a tow.

Do the headlights dim when you try to start it?

So I am definitely stumped on this. Today I went down expecting to need to have it towed. Tried to start it and it fired right up like there was nothing ever wrong. Checked the battery voltage after it was running and they were both reading at least 14.3v. I definitely want to correct this problem so this doesn't happen again. Any thoughts as to what it is?

Wiring connections. Check them all for corrossion. Start with the starter and work your way to the batteries including grounds

I think I may have figured out the problem this morning. Went to start the truck and I just got the thud sound when turning the key and thought "here we go again". Something told me to mess with the shifter. I held the brakes, put it in D, then turned the key while moving it to N. It fired right up without any issues. This tells me that it has something to do with the shifter, neutral safety switch, and/or transmission range switch.
