air intake lid

Hello all. On my 97 7.3, I've been repeatedly getting a soaking wet air filter. It's a K&N cone filter. It does has an enclosure around it, except facing the grille, which the batteries do most of the blocking, and the top, there is no lid. When it gets wet, the engine will act up and the CEL will come on. You shut it off, start it up like nothing happened, but when you start driving it wil do it again. It almost left me stranded the other day in heavy snow.

Anyways, I was wondering if I could make my own lid, maybe with some holes in it. I have been refusing to make on because I know these engines need a lot of air, and didn't know if amost enclosing the thing completely would not give it enough air. So has anyone done this or do you think I can do this with no harm to the engine? Thanks for the replies

Note: It only does this when driving on wet roads with rain or snow. The Dick Cepek 33's I have probably contribute to it. Every time I drive on a wet road, I blow-dry the filter. It's wet every time

Personally I would ditch the k and n and get an s and b intake. Fully enclosed except where the air dam would hook to it

Thanks man I hate the K&N too. Sadly that's what she came with. I'll look at S&B
