1997 Powerstroke won't start hot or cold

Hello,

I have a 1997 F-350 and it won't start at all. We just replaced the starter today and we had to plug it in and jump it just to start it. We took it for about a 2 hour drive on highways and the interstate to charge the batteries. When we got home we let it cool down and shut it off and about 20 seconds later and it cranked for about 5 seconds and sputtered up to an idle. We tried it again 5 minutes later and not it will not start. We are charging the batteries and have it plugged in and are hoping it will start tomorrow. Also, if it matters it sat for a week before we replaced the starter.
