Talking 1996 PS Vaccuum and brake booster problem

I am new to power strokes, anyone ever had a engine vaccuum problem? My brakes work soft and correct sometimes and then other times you better be ready to stand up on them. I noticed that my A/C fan air periodically moves between windshield and out the front of the dash. I think I have incosistent vaccuum from the engine which is affecting the other components. Pleae help me understand what might be going on and how to fix.

There is no engine vacuum with a diesel engine. The PSD would have been Ford's perfect opportunity to ditch its 1950s-era vacuum-operated HVAC controls in favor of electrical or mechanical (cable) controls, and convert the brake power assist to "hydroboost" (a system that uses power steering hydraulic pressure for power brakes). That would have gotten rid of the need for vacuum anywhere in the truck. But noooo, they hung onto the old technology as they like to do. So our engines get a vacuum pump, driven by the serpentine belt, just for the purpose of running the power brakes and HVAC. And yours is quite evidently failing. Remans are available at your FLAPS. There's a place online, Accurate Diesel, that has NEW vac pumps, claims they're OEM. We have one in our '95 EC, working fine for 20,000+ miles.

Thanks sounds like I need to replace the vac pump then. I only asked because the previous owner said he has already replaced the vac pump. Maybe a bad, reman one.

Dorman and Cardone are the big-name remans, neither of which have exactly stellar histories.

One other possibility is the serpentine belt. Do you happen to notice if the power steering is more difficult, and/or the voltage on the dash gauge goes down, when you have the brake/HVAC issues?

Replaced the vac pump on mine with a reman from NAPA. The first reman that I picked up was bad- had to take it back. So a bad reman is definitely a possibility. 25k on the second one and its OK.
