Fuel pressure reg does not have spring or plunger?

So the other day i started to do the fuel reg shim mod with a bb. I removed the plug and the spring and plunger was not in there? I dont know if anybody might have any insight as to why and if that is bad. It has a new superduty electronic pump and it uses a banjo block so the original fuel filter canister is in use. I put a gauge on it and it runs at about 80 psi.
