I think I have a glow plug issue...no start in the cold

Well I've had this truck for about 3 weeks and today is the first time it has been less than 50 degrees outside. WTs light cycles for 3 seconds and goes off but the truck doesn't fire. Just cranks. I finally found the block heater cord, the previous owner zip tied it up under the motor. So it's plugged in now. My question is, if the wts light cycles normal, is it the glow plugs or something else like a relay? I don't know much about glow plugs, my previous diesels didnt have them (cummins). The last time it didn't start, I put a cps on the truck and it fired up...and that was 3 weeks ago. I can't imagine it went bad already. After I stopped trying to crank it I noticed puffs of white/grey smoke coming out of the tailpipe if that aids in the diagnosis at all

sounds like a GP issue to me. Do you hear the GP relay click on when you turn the key?

No but I wasn't listening for it either. It fired right up once it was plugged in for about 14 minutes

Well now I have bigger issues. I replaced the passenger side glow plugs with no issue, pulled the drivers side cover off to find the wire harness connector that gives power to the injectors and glow plug was melted all up to itself. Put a new gasket on that side with new harnesses that go to the injectors and glow plugs...kept the original connectors that are on the harness outside of the valve cover. Then replaced the glow plugs. Now the truck cranks but will not start. It started one time after cranking it for about 8 seconds but it ran like it wasn't running on all cylinders and then turned off. When you crank the truck you can hear a THUMP thump THUMP thump everytime the motor makes a revolution. One thump sounds like its coming from the drivers side, the other from the passenger side. It almost sounds like pops of air, not metal to metal tapping. Puffs out white smoke but doesn't start. Am I correct in thinking that the new valve cover gasket that has the internal harness built ito it, is suspect? As in the new harness is not feeding power to the injectors? I can hear the glow plug relay pop on every key stroke. Wts light goes on and comes off within 3 seconds. And ideas?

I tried plugging it in to see if it would help to get it started but it didn't work

have you added any fuel additives?is there a possible badfuel problem?lets see,you got the smoke out the tailpipe, that takes care of many things, what does the fuel bowl look like?any separation issues, odd color?just trying ideas for ya,do you have any more thoughts on the thump?

No fuel additives, fuel bowl is full with a week old filter. No weird coloring in the fuel. I can't pinpoint the thumping other than it sounds like its coming from each of the valve covers. Hard to pinpoint it by myself but it sounds like when you take an empty paper towel roll and hit the end of it with your hand. I've cranked it until the batteries died. Tomorrow after work I'm going to take the drivers side cover back off and see if the wiring is melted again. I'm thinking that the harness in the valve cover is bad because its the only new part other than the glow plugs themselves. The glow plugs can't be the issue because it would have fired up and ran fine once I plugged it in...but that's not the case.
