'98 E-350 w/ 343k mi., Worth keeping?
We have a 1998 E-350 with the 7.3L Powerstroke. The van has 343k miles, and the truck body is starting to fall apart around the powertrain. The drivetrain is good...no trans problems. However, the engine started running rough some time in the past 20-30k miles and has become very weak recently. We just had a Ford dealer diagnose it and apparently it needs at least 2 new injectors, in addition to some new fuel lines. They quoted us roughly $4,000 to do the work, but they basically advised against it due to the mileage on the truck. We have had this truck since it was brand new, so it sucks to have to finally retire the beast, but we cannot justify putting that kind of money into this thing anymore. We have an offer for around $2,500 for the truck. With this high mileage, do you guys think it's worthwhile to get a repair quote from a local diesel shop or should we just get what we can for the truck? We have considered doing the work ourselves, but it sounds somewhat complicated. I'm also nervous about spending any money on it because of other threads I read on here stating that injector replacement doesn't always solve the engine's issues.
I really appreciate any input you guys can give. Thank you.
