new lpop..hpop still empty

96 97k miles all stock

It started when i went to start it. Would start, run for like 10 seconds and die. Try again and it started and ran fine. Next time it did the same thing but didnt stay running the second time. Checked the hpop sump and its empty. Replaced lpop with a mellings, rebuilt the fuel bowl, new fuel bowl harness, checked fuel psi (55-65psi), and changed the oil.

Filled the hpop sump and tried to start, cranked for 15 seconds and then started. Took the rpms up to 1500 and after a short time it ran great, lpop was doing its job. Since then every time i start it takes a long time to start. I used it one day for about 5 hours, after it runs for a wile it will start up like normal (very fast). It also ran great that day, good power, wot and idle. I had no complaints at all.

Go out to start it the next morning and its back to doing what it was before, taking 15 seconds to start and once it starts it runs till the hpop is empty and then it dies most of the time. Even if i ramp the rpms up to get the lpop pumping oil it still dies. I even left the block heater plugged in all day to see if that would help, same thing.

Bad ipr?

Cracked pickup tube? It ran so great for about 5 hours that one day.

Crank case oil is full.

Any help would be great

I don't know a out your hpop lpop issues. Haven't done that yet. But I just changed fuel lift pump and pulled the fpr screen. I had the same problem for a while. Really Longgggggggg cranks. Like 10 seconds. Then 5 seconds.

What I did was kept purging the schraeder valve on the fpr. Took me a few times of cranking running shut off, purge valve. Do all over again.

Then all the sudden it was back to normal. And I always misdiagnose everything else as here it was one battery was low. Not enough to crank over in 1 second.

Keep us posted

Thanks for the post.

I kinda wondered if it was fuel related but after it would start after cranking for a wile it would run great for like 10 or so seconds with no smoke and then just sputter and die. Check the hpop sump and its almost bone dry.
Pretty much pointing to the lpop.

If i try cranking again after it dies, without filling the hpop sump, it will occasionally start to fire going up to maybe 350-400 rpms. But i dont want to keep topping off the hpop sump and trying to start if the lpop isnt sending oil to therest of the engine.

Thanks for the post. Gotta get this thing running!
