Smoke out turbo cold start

I'm a new diesel owner and I've been reading on here and learned that cold starts make lots of white smoke. It is not that cold where I live and this morning, first time this has happened, the engine wouldn't start, it kept turning and white smoke was coming out of the tailpipe and the turbo where it meets the DP. It took a couple tries before it started and ran normal. It was only 55 F this morning. Am I paranoid, is this normal? or is there a problem? A week ago I had the fuel pump replaced. I don't know if that might have anything to do with it.

Thanks guys I appreciate it!

If you havent figured this out by now, what i suggest is testing your gpr, even in 55 degree weather dieselS need glow plugs to start good. Because you live in a warmer climate, im sure the glow plugs/relay have never been checked or changed ever because its not really a huge necessity there so you would never know you have a problem until a day rolls around that is a bit chillier and your truck is like "F you man i aint starting"
