Hard starting after repairs

Quick story......broke the main rear brake line and went to drop the tank and the sending unit broke. I ended up taking the bed off and fixing anything that needed it from the cab on back. All new brakes, wheel cyl., shock towers, front spring hangers, e brake cables, etc. I deleted the rear tank as it never worked and I just wanted to clean it up under there.

So this project took about 3 months. I went to start it and it took at least 3 times as long for it to fire. Now, I also sent the sending unit to be reconditioned and needed to buy and new pick-up as the original was cracked in a few spots. Could it be air in the system? Also do I need to plug off the fitting for the rear tank? I had no problems starting it before........Few day later tried starting again and the same thing happened. Starter just kept going and finally started. Thanks for any help.
