PCM help!!!
ok, so i was driving the other night and my truck just died like i shut the key off. i can crank, crank, crank and nothing. i have no wait to start light, no check engine light, GPR not clicking on, nothing. I checked #9 fuse under the hood and it is ok, people were saying that fuse controls PCM. so we hook up a scanner and it wont connect to the truck. reading on here it sounds like it is the PCM?? i pulled it out of the truck tonight, it doesnt smelled burned and doesnt have any signs of burning up. it is a F5TF-12A650-FJ BEG8. if have been looking and looks like it is going to be the double the cost of any other PCM. my main concern is #1 does this sound like PCM failure and #2 can i use another PCM as long as it is made for a 5sp tranny. please help guys, i have a job sat that i have to haul my skid steer 50 miles to go work......

It's the #22 fuse that energizes the PCM. Middle row in the fuse box, furthest away from the fender. But if it's blown, don't just replace it. Disconnect the fuel heater from the fuel bowl first (IIRC, midway down the fuel bowl, two wires, one of them red/green). It's probably shorted out and that's what blew the fuse.

X2 on what madpoque suggests. Looks like you have a 94? Basing that on the BEG8 calibration on your PCM. If that's correct, then you can use any 49-state PCM for a manual tranny. My 94 PCM was refalshed to a 96 ALF4 calibration and that's what I replaced it with when mine went south. Cheers!

A reflash is when the programming in the PCM is changed. The dealers did this when new programming (some of it to fix problems) came out. They did mine to enable the better diagnostics capability of the later trucks. Make sure you check the fuses with a meter (plenty of folks have given it just the eyeball test and been wrong). If you do still have the BEG8 programming, a scanner will not connect at the underdash OBDII port as it is not activated (until they reflash it like mine). The only diagnostic port available on a factory 94 is under the hood (driver's side near the rear corner of the hood). Cheers!

i did go ahead and check all the fuses with a meter, i always do that just to be sure. interesting stuff on the flashing, i have always used my under dash port to check codes and it has always worked...sounds like the truck has been reflashed at some point. if i remember correct the under hood wasnt working for my mechanic. i went ahead and ordered a PCM that was BEG8 yesterday before i read this. i guess once it comes in and hopefully fixes the truck i need to have it updated flashed and send back my TW tuner that i had burned for the BEG8. always learing something new on here. will i have to take the truck to the stealership to reflash? thanks for your help.

You may find a dealer that can do it, but some don't have a clue. Check with DP Tuner as I've heard they can reflash them. Cheers!
