my truck dont like to start when its about 50 or colder out (unless it hasnt completely cooled to outside temp. after it was running or pluged in), crank it for a little 2-3 times, then it fires up(yes theres white smoke), Im thinkin glow plugs are going? its a 97 with 135,000
It could be glowplugs, but check the glowplug relay first. Measure the voltage drop across the relay when it is active (its active for about 1.5 minutes after the key is turned to Wait-to-Start). You do this by meauring the voltage from each relay large post to ground and subtracting the 2 values OR you can put the meter leads on each large post (one lead on one large post and the other lead on the other large post) and this will give you the drop directly. Anything larger than 0.3V in drop and you need a new relay. Cheers!
