Does the gauge get to the middle of NORMAL or just the N if its just the N the senders bad. As for the smoke i do not know, does it do it all the time or just cold?. On the passenger side their is the barb for the heater core freeze plugs and thats it.

the temp gauge gets to the R,M on NORMAL but sometimes gets to A, that is when the eng temp light goes on and off. on at idle off with throttle. it has a new water pump and new thermostat. could they be the culprit? the radiator doesn,t seem too hot after my normal 30min drive. as for the smoke i asked someone to verify the color and it's just gray at start up witch is "normal" i think?

Replace the second sensor for the light. I have a heater valve installed and going down the interstate the gauge reads between R and M. The A seems a little high. Radiator caps on the jugs can cause a little warm issue. The cap keeps the cooling system under pressue to raise the waters boiling point. Without being there I would say look at the truck real good and if the caps not new replace it. Its a $8 part that wont hurt to be replaced. When did it start doing it right after you did the thermostat and WP?

The "engine temp" sending unit is beside the water pump on the passenger side of the timing cover. It is possible that the sending unit's wire was pinched between the water pump and timing cover when the pump was replaced, causing the erratic light and a coolant leak.
