Fuel light starts flashing then truck starts running rough?

A buddy brought his 97 psd to my house yesterday here is a little history on truck about a month ago the truck wouldnt crank said it sounded like it wanted to but just kept turning over he puts a cps and a new fuel filter in and truck runs great til this past sunday and it starts cutting out going down the road and fuel filter light is flashing truck will idle(rough). So he repeats new cps and fuel filter again truck runs good for few miles then starts cutting out again sometimes you can pull over keep messing with it and it will clear up but few miles down road will do it again any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you check fuel pressure? Their is a screen on the side of the fuel bowl that gets clouged and causes a poor run condition. Is the truck fine going down the road? Also when he put a new filter in did he let the bowl drain??

We found some burnt wires on the valve cover harness s so replaced both sides still no luck when you first take off truck runs great then about a mile down the road it will barely pull itself seems to me like its flooding was a lot of white smoke yesterday when it started missing
