Worried about using 4x4

It seems as if there's a big snow storm that could hit Monday. If that's the case and depending if I am driving in it, I might have to engage 4x4. A few weeks ago the pinion seal on the front diff started leaking fluid really bad. I'm guessing that most, if not all of the fluid leaked out. Unfortunately I am extremely busy this weekend and won't be able to change the seal. I've actually never done one, so I wouldn't even know where to begin if I did have the time. Are there any things I can do so no damage will be done in case I do have to use 4x4 on Monday?
