Front differential seal leaking. Is this a hard fix?
My '97 f350 is leaking gear oil where the front axle shaft comes out of the differential on the drivers side. i'm trying to figure out what all needs to come off to get to that seal and what "special" tools i may need for this type repair. i think i can do it if i had some guidance. thanks.

The axle tube seals are located inside the pumpkin. Remove the brake caliper, hub and rotor. Unbolt the spindle and knock it free with a soft-faced mallet. Pull out the side shaft. Remove differential cover and drain oil. Mark carrier bearing caps for side and top/bottom. Remove carrier cap bolts.
****CAUTION**** Have an assistant help pull out the differential carrier, catching bearing races and shims as the carrier is pulled out. These must be replaced in their original locations for proper gear contact/mesh on assembly. Once the carrier is out, drive the seal from the axle tube into the center housing. Drive new seal in and re-assemble. Torque spec on bearing cap bolts is 80-90 ft-lb. |
