So I was leaving a light, shifted from 2nd to 3rd, big boom, driveshaft dragging on ground. So I'm sitting here looking at it and decided to go to a junkyard but noticed that my shaft snapped from the mount on the differential. So now I'm stuck. Do I need a new shaft and diff? Please help I'm broke as a joke and need this truck running.
Sorry for the poor quality but no the mount doesn't have an adapter plate, that's what I thought it was so I thought I would have no problem replacing it. I left the light in second because you know the manual trans 1st is only for towing, went into third seconds after acceleration boom! I don't believe the rear locked up as the truck kept rolling just fine and I was able to use 4wd to put it in a parking spot
or do you think the strap came loose and caused the issue
or did the u joint look dry ?
the drive shaft may be repairable
the problem with the replacement yoke is it also sets the pinion depth using a crush washer
if i was out in the woods I would buy a new spicer yoke
mark the pinion nut and carefully count how many turns it took to remove the old unit
then install as i removed it problem here is the new part may not be exactly the same
best way is have a new crush washer installed and set but this takes more disassembly of the axle
I didn't find the other part cause this happened at 3:30 in the morning after a 13 hour shift on a pitch black back road. I'm gonna be going to work in the next two hours and I can send some more up close pics of the whole situation. Sorry if I'm not answering your questions the best I'm more of a powertrain guy not to experienced with drivetrains
Just looks like you broke the U-joint and sheared the bolts to the strap.
Driveshaft will be ok, have a shop make sure it's straight and balanced and a new U joint.
Shop might even have another U joint strap, luckily the bolts sheared so the threads will be good once you get those studs out. Some PB blaster and heat and easy out should do the trick.
Could have been much worse. You should be ok at a driveshaft shop for around $100 but no promises.
Thank you both for your input, stopped on the way to work to take some more pictures for youguys to hopefully get some confirmation. Thank you again guys.
that top strap bolt worked it's way out and the damage followed IMO
driveshaft checked and a new u joint ( joints) / strap and bolts /easy out / should get you going as long as the axle yoke looks OK at the mating surface and has the stop tang in place
thats why i had my u joints replaced at 100K yours are dry LOL
So guys the back bolt on the hanger for the shaft is being a pain in my ***, is it completely necessary for me to go Change the u joint or can I just get new straps, I'm in Arizona and I'm working in a parking lot so it's hot as hell out here and I can't get the bolt out
Yeah cause the problem I'm having now is the last bolt is just spinning with the nut on the driveshaft hanger but the space isn't even big enough to get anything in there, not to mention the little metal piece that's on top of it making it impossible to get any socket or wrench on it
I had the exact same thing happen to me twice. The first time it broke the bolts off in the rear yoke, and the second time the bolts backed out and caused it to come loose. I put a new u-joint and strap kit on and everything has been fine since, I didn't have to change the pinion bearing or driveshaft, be sure to put locktite on the bolts for the yoke when you install them.
