i have been looking into this a bit here recently and the guy from the mag is mark deluca. here is his web site: DeLuca Fuel Products
he built his set-up and is starting to build them for other makes/models also. i spoke with him via e-mail about one for my 95.
here are the basics i know from my research. first, it is not a complete conversion to cng, but a dual fuel set-up. it is much the same as water/meth and propane in that it is sprayed into the air intake charge pre-turbo then mixes with the diesel in the combustion chamber and is burned in conjention with the diesel during the comprssion/ignition process. I have read that it is safe up to a 9:1 mix of cng:diesel, but have been told that it is more realistic to think that a 7:3 mix is more realistic due to the loss of the lubricity for the engine that the diesel fuel provides. as far as the system goes it seems pretty straight forward. tank in bed plumbed to a manually metered regulator valve then on to the nozzle installed in the intake tube. regulator wired to a switch in the cab allowing the system to be turned on or off. the vehicle can be run on the cng fumigation system or straight #2 diesel as required by the owner or fuel supply allow. there is no tapping heads, installing spark plugs, or major engine modifications. as the cng is added the trucks computer compensates for the additional cng as fuel and adjusts the amount of #2 being added to the combustion process. the benefits of this type of system are cleaner more efficient fuel burn, horse power increases of up to 100hp, increased engine longevity, recorded lower egt's, and of course increase fuel economy. now, not every engine will see the same results power and economy wise because every engine is different and fuel savings depend on prices and availability in your area. before anyone starts telling me i'm wrong or starts throwing stones, i am NOT a professional mechanic and this knowledge is what i have learned reseaching this subject myself and is being presented to help others better understand the concept of cng fumigation on a diesel engine and is open for corrections.
