Unreal, glad you got it figured out though, was it the same problem with all the alts? a specific defective part, or do you know.

Gord.

toggle switch in place of fuse

well we put a toggle switch in place of the 10 amp regulator fuse under the hood and it was working but even with tha switch off somthing comes on during the nite and sucks power thru the other wire in the alt.If i unplug the alt it will start no problem . the electrical shop kept it for 3 weeks and thought this switch would work but STILL HAPPENING.....I am about ready for a fire so i can get a new truck[KIDDING FOLKS] but i am at the end of my rope.

somewhere you've got a short. Check the entire charging circuit and any acc. you may have connected to it..double check. You can have a drain through that circuit without the alt being bad. the Alt connects to the batt, the batt connects to the power dist. box and goes on from there..etc..etc.

wow....bad luck.......

I can't really think of anything that would "take out" an alternator like that.

I can't recall exactly how the Ford alternator works / is wired....but you may want to get a wiring diagram, and check to make sure all hte "little" wires are getting the correct voltage signal when the key is ON and the correct signal when it is OFF.....as it is possible that something is wrong in the truck that is keeping the alternator "ON" even when the truck is off.

I would have checked to see if the alternator was drawing current IMMEDIATLY after install, before you even fired the truck...to verify it was good out of the box......

You definetly have a short some where. Have the batteries ever been hooked up backwards? This will fry your alt. Ruining the voltage regulator. If the regulator has a bad diod in it, it will allow a constant drain and it won't change the ac currant that the alt makes to dc for your batteries correctly, which will kill your batteries. As for the battery light, there are two thin wires that go into a white plastic connector on top of the alt, this connector sometimes comes loose without actually coming off. just push down on the connector and your light will go out more than likely.
