PCM Failure? Truck not roadworthy; need help!

EDIT: READ POST 3 for Resolution.

05 F350 6.0 4x4...

approx. 13k miles...

Was taking my parents to the Dr. today; got almost there and the following occurs on a 4-lane @ approx. 45-50mph or so.

In od; low RPM (1250ish); low load/tps.

Get a 'lope' or slight 'misfire' or 'surging' going on and engine acts like its about to cut out (very light at first); come to stop at redlight and I feel it get stronger; put in neutral; tach takes off to about 15-1600RPM before I cut the key. When it took off/ran away on its own it went VERY rich and rolled black smoke.

Waited a few moments and went to refire...would crank/spin fine but would not hit. Nothing...

Glow plug lamp on dash seemed to remain illuminated far too long.

Had to push truck to side and take care of parents while trying not to get run over in turn lane...so didn't get back to deal with it until several hours later.

Truck has never towed or been overheated. Full of antifreeze; did not puke; fluid not aerated. Full of oil; no apparent fuel or water in oil by feel and smell. Has Motorcraft oil filter installed; no water in fuel lamp; running Motorcraft cetane booster in proper doseage.

Got back to truck; pluged in Mac scantool to get DTC's (NO MIL is illuminated during this whole event)...gives error code; cannot read DTC's nor imminent DTC's. Plugged in a different tool and it read "detecting memory" and never progressed any further (as it should have).

Both times I've had the Mac tool give this error code the ECM/PCM was shot.

Had to click key to "run" to operate the scans; the Glowplug lamp remained on for an extended period. Third time it was "normal" and only lit shortly; went out; I started the truck. It started normally with no excessive spool time; no smoke; no funny noises; it was smooth and operated as if nothing happened at all. Drove around a large parking lot, shifted normally, ran normally.

Any light that can be shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated. I left the truck where it is as it was raining and I was a bit scared to drive it and have the runaway condition repeat and risk being stuck out on the interstate.

Would appreciate any info ASAP.

Also; the truck has an older flash from Ford in it that wrote out the EGR on-time during extended idle. I would like to have it back; I don't want the newer program that keeps the injector heaters "on" for an extended period of time. I know the strategy code of what was in it; along with the main computer code (YRE2). Is there ANY way to get the "Older" strategy/program back if I have to get a new PCM?

Thanks!

Resolution at this point is that the ICP was bad. Replaced ICP; truck has now run for 3+hrs with no issue. Also its obvious the timing has changed; my exhaust note has changed and it feels like its gained 30+HP. It has NEVER run this well.
