Stuck in Bfe west texas with a rough running truck
I must be jinxed in this area of Tx. Anyways, yesterday evening about 30mi out of Van Horn, Tx my truck ('99 7.3, 200k on engine, manual trans) lost power and started running rough. Got towed back to Van Horn and figured out the likely culprit was the uvc harness. Limped into a shop this morning and found the 4 injector wires plus the common looked like all the insulation had been chewed off and just the bare wires were exposed. Pulled them apart and the truck instantly ran better. Then as it was sitting there it pissed coolant all over. So after a new water pump and some liquid tape on the wires, we were on our way and the truck ran great. About 40 miles down the road, I lost power and it started running rough again. Checked the wires and made sure they were separated, it ran better but was still missing and low on power.
Finally was able to limp it into a rest area and I said screw it and pulled the driver side valve cover to check the plug. Well it has previously been fixed with a zip tie. So, frustrated and out of ideas, I put it back together and it seemed to run okay and we made it the 25mi into Ft. Stockton Tx. Now it seems to be running okay, maybe slightly down on power.
Things I noted when it started running rough:
Egts started to sky rocket, 950 plus at 50mph and losing speed.
Seems to only happen after the engine builds some heat.
Comes and goes.
I was given the # to "a guy who knows these engines" that is local, but if he isnt able to scan and monitor the engine while its running, Im not even messing with him. Theres also a Ford dealer, so maybe I'll just have them scan and diagnose it. Im just trying to figure out where to go from here and what to suspect. Im not 100% confident its not the uvc harness or the wiring since its chewed up.
