Is there any help out there for my tranny?

Hello all! I am new to this forum and as I was looking at some of the posting and answeres looks like some very knowleable folks out there! Heres my problem: I have a 01 superduty with 7.3 4r100 trans with 175000 on it. I have had the fluid and filter changed to synthetic. I very seldom use this for hauling a heavy load. Last year I got in and it wouldn't go in forward. It would go in reverse but not forward. After letting it sit a few minutes I started it back up and it took off and shifted like nothing ever happened. That happened again after about 6 months. Then again maybe once a month. Now more often. I can get in the morning and go to work but when I go to leave it may do it.I had it scanned and it showed no codes. When it does this it will start to move a few feet then like pop out of gear and not move. Any help out there? Thanks ahead of time!

7.3 tranny

Go buy the latest edition of Diesel Power Magazine. They have an entire article in this months issue about troubleshooting the trannys on the 7.3's

Sounds like low pressure. Get a transmission shop to take a look. I got an improved transmission shift kit that made a sluggish trans into one that really shifted well. It cost about $68 three years ago.

KYStroke, First off I would like to say Welcome to the forum. I am sure there are lots of fokes on here that will help you with this problem.
Here is what I would do. Call Brian at Brians Truck Shop He will be able to tell you what you need to do to your truck. Hope you come back often.

Thanks All for the welcome!

I posted this in the 911 because I need to get this fixed quick. I use this every day for work so I will have to fix it or buy a new truck.I have only had a few problems with this truck in 175000 so I am pleased with it and really love this diesel. If it comes down to a new trans what do you all recomend any body use ATS or BD? Any body have a truck for sale?

Sounds like you may have some internal trans problems. putting a shift kit in yours will not fix your problem. I haven't messed with the 4R100's enough to make an accurate diagnosis, but I won't be surprised to find out that it is going to need replaced. One of the techs should see this and hopefully give you some good insight on what direction you need to go in. Good luck.

Joe

When you had it scanned did you use a transmission scan tool. If you used the regular OBD2 scan tool that is why you did not get any trouble codes. I bet your trans has been having the OD light on the shift flash at you. I bet you have experinced hard shifts occassionally, I bet you have experinced sluggish response from your tranny. You have 175,000 miles on your tranny. The way I see it time for a rebuild and be happy that you got 175,000 miles out of your trans.

Take it to a tranny shop that has the tranny diagnostic computer. They will be able to tell you exactly what is wrong with your trans after one test drive.

I like and have used AAMCO many times for transmission problems. With there nationwide availibilty and they have a good warranty too.

I took my truck to AMCO and they scaned it .What kind of scan they used I dont know. They didnt test drive it but after they scanned it they said it had to come out and torn down to see what was wrong. I asked about maybe electricle problems like soleinoids and they told me that even if you unplugged all the wirs that it would still shift into both forward and reverse just fine.I don't know but that didn't sound right to me.

They are correct on that. Even if you disconnect the wiring harness to the tranny it will still shift. Most likely what has happened is the torq converter is no good. There for causing your first syptoms. I been through pretty much every type of tranny problem there is. From simple leaks to complete burned up trannys. I have used the AAMCO by me twice the first time was because my wiring to my tranny some how got wrapped around my front driveshaft and got all tore up. The second time was for a complete rebuild. All my other tranny problems were taken care of at the dealership.

What typically happens is the Torq Converter burns up then that contaminates the fluid damaging the rest of the internals of the tranny.

What AAMCO typically does is they have 3 stages of repair. 1st stage is repair or replace only the worn parts this is not warrantied because the other parts that are not replaced could cause failure.
2nd stage is replace all the clutches and worn gears in the tranny still no warranty as the worn out parts could cause failure.
3rd stage is completely rebuild the tranny, most of the time they will rebuild the tranny with all the upgrades that are out there, this will cost around 2,700 dollars, you get a 1 year 12,000 mile warranty that can be done at any AAMCO in the nation.

I am not saying that AAMCO is the best out there. But I have always had good luck with them. I have used them on my current truck and previous trucks. I had them do work for me in Cali, and in Michigan.

Most likely your trans is in need of a rebuild. I have had the same problems your having and it ended up needing rebuilt or replaced with a new tranny.
