Stranded in Tennessee 2006 6.0 Will crank blows black smoke, won't start.

Stranded in Springfield TN. Truck won't start. Cranking and trying sometimes but won't run. It has been starting harder since it turned colder. Yesterday morning did the same thing than eventually popped off. Have had it on a charger and plugged in all day. Pulled the top fuel filter and there is fuel. Puffing some black smoke.

Sorry, but without checking for DTCs with a scan tool or monitoring live data, you're just as good as pissing in the dark. If I were to GUESS, I would say it sounds like your FICM has quit on you, and I stress this is only a GUESS based on what you describe. To DIAGNOSE, you will need to have it scanned to pinpoint the cause, and I suggest doing this BEFORE you spend money on parts and labour in GUESSES.

I have to run down to the other side of Nashville in the morning, but I can stop by and put my laptop on it on my way back up 24 tomorrow afternoon. Leave some contact info up here, or PM with it.

Chan, what do I need to look for, test for with AE software? I'm not as 6.0 savy as I could be.

I sent him a PM telling him to get in touch with you or Chris. Troy lives in Springfield. If we can get some location info we might be able to help.

BTW, THANKS for the rapid response. I'm outa here for the day. I can still be reached by cell if need be.

Right on. I'll put the software on it for sure, but I dunno if I can lend much more help other than diagnostics. I leave town monday for a few weeks, and I got plenty of honey-do's this weekend.

However, I'd be happy to swing by tomorrow, as I'll be runnin down the freeway right past Springfield.

All the FICM data has been posted in a previous thread by M-Chan. the thing to keep in mind here is that this information does not come free, meaning it has to be purchased from Ford at some point by someone. whether that is the ford dealership, or an independent shop, or an aftermarket information provider such as alldata, or mitchell who then offers it to subscribers FOR A FEE. even if this turns out to be an FICM, you will still need to go to the dealer or a capable aftermarket shop and have it replaced and programmed/flashed as this can only be done with the IDS software.

As M-Chan has stated, do not throw parts. it will end up costing more than it would to take it to a competent dealer, or diesel shop, we have the schooling, tooling and information to keep your 6.0 liter on the road.

Uh, thanks.

So, besides a code, how can I tell for sure if it's his FICM or not? Any tests I can run?

You wont be able to look at all the listed pid's with autoenginuity, but enough to tell if it is at issue, scan for codes first, post them up, we should be able to "guess" if the FICM is fubar, lol
