I also herd that it blocks about 20% of the airflow inside the pipe, so I would imagine if you remove it, the air flows a little better. But if your in a colder climate I think It might be a good Idea to leave it on. Not that sure of the percentege though, I'm sure one of the techs will be able to clear that up.
