pull the cowel back off of the steering column and check the connectors that plug into the MF switch. Check for both broken retainer clips that would make it not stay fulley engaged and also maybe a corroded or pushed out pin that isnt making good contact. Thats the first place to start since it worked with the switch hanging off of the column. That tells me its probably wiring related and should be close to the switch.......
