EDGE performance chips/programmers

Hey I am brand new to this site, but have browsed for quite some time. I have strictly a stock 99 Powerstroke 7.3L Diesel on a 99 F 250 Super Duty Extended Cab 4x4 swb truck. I love it, but I am always interested in more power and better fuel economy. I don't want to get very in depth with my modifying, (I'm not a shop junkie)--A friend of mine who is a great mechanic recommends the Edge Programmer or Chip, I am not exactly sure what he's talking about... Should I do anything with this? I don't want to change exhaust or do any tranny work etc... Is there really a product that I can plug in to the computer of my truck and 5/15 minutes later I have more horsepower and better fuel economy? Will it harm my truck? Why doesn't the factory program these trucks this way? As you can see, I am an average joe... My truck drives me to work during the week, to the duck swamp on the weekend and pulls cattle in between all of that... I'm open to any advise you have for me. Thanks a lot and what a great site!
