This is just from my understanding of how the injector system operates and reports from the observations of other individuals that have had a HPOP system leak or failure.

Because the injectors are HP oil based/actuated; when the HPOP leaks and can't build pressure; the injector can't operate fully (or at all) thus it doesn't deliver the proper fuel load (thus going lean) irregardless of the fuel pressure.
