How To Modify The 7.3 IDI
Ok, I know this questions been asked a billion times, but I just bought this truck yesterday. I've got a '93 F-250 XLT 4x4. These are the diesels that got me into diesels all together, but all I've ever done is repair them. I wasn't sure if there's a performance market for these IDIs or just some things I could do to make it run better, get better MPG, etc. Is there a way to tweak the injector pump like you can with the old Cummins VE pump? I know the things I need to look for maintenance stuff, but what can I do to this bad boy & get a little 'umph'?

Turbo it! lol You can tweak the pump some but mostly all u will get is smoke they dont seem to run to much better. ATS Diesel builds a good turbo kit for that truck.

Yes, you can advance the pump, but as you mentioned fuel mileage... advancing the pump will not get you that at all. As far as power? Turbo will go a long way on that bad boy. The idi will go a long way just towing, but she isn't much on performance.
unless... You p-pump her, and run twins. I believe the 7.3 idi was the first in the 10's. |

I'm sorry. Not a 10sec idi, apparently it's in the 9's.
All credit goes to Saber123316 Apparently... according to various sources Max Legold created the first 9 second diesel pickup out of a IDI 7.3 back in the early 90's. so... Putting my investigative work to the test I e-mailed Hypermax. I got this: Re: indirect injection 9 second diesel from the early 90's From: info@gohypermax.com Sent: December 5, 2008 4:44:29 PM To: Jordan We did build a coupleAll the info was given in the article it was an inline pump with 2 turbos Thanks ------Original Message------From: Jordan Greenling To: info@gohypermax.com Sent: Dec 5, 2008 10:00 AM Subject: indirect injection 9 second diesel from the early 90's In a diesel world article it said that Max Legold (sorry if I don't have the correct spelling) built a hotrod Diesel truck that made huge power and did 9 second passes the engine was orginally ment for sled pulling but got banned and then became a drag racing vehicle. I just wanted to know if this was correct and if I could get information on it. So it was P-pump twin turbo 7.3 IDI. putting the investigative work a little further... I found pictures.
