Back about a year ago I purchased my 1st ever diesel truck, a 1990 bone stock F250 IDI 7.3 with a utility box & 1 ton suspension. I got the truck for $1700 bucs rust free from New Mexico & since then I heave replaced the utility box with a rust free regular 8 foot box that I got painted to match the rest of the truck, truck turned out great looks like new. Now I won't tell you the truck drives like a new one, just turned 318K on the clock but I will say this has to be one of the better things I have ever purchased in my life. Had many skeptics laugh at me for buying a diesel right during the diesel prices were moving up & then surged too over $5 bucs a gallon here where I live.
My commute to work is 100 miles, this full size f250 consistently delivers me 22mpg cruising at 65mph & about 1.7K on the tachometer. Never does anyone ever believe me when I tell them my MPG with this full size pickup, they all say yea right. Now it does use about a qt of oil every 1200 miles or so but chit, I'm not complaining. I did have to replace the water pump, but that's it. This thing runs like it going to go another 300K...is there anything other then changing the fluids & filters that I should be doing besides driving it, like I said this is my 1st ever diesel, but surely not my lastTIA, 69 |

As far as I know, you got it. Clean fluids and clean filters. Mine is a 2000 F350 and has 310,000 on it, also running like it will go another 300,000 or so. |

Does yours use any oil?

Well I've only owned it long enough to put about 5000 miles on it.......So far no oil loss at all!! Very pleased with the truck |

If you have an auto don't forget to service it, they have a tendency to get forgotten. The new ULSD fuel has sort of low lubricity compared with the old stuff, I run a biodiesel blend to make up for the lubricity. Pure bio can cause problems with fuel lines and cleaning out your fuel system (plugging the fuel filter) but a little bit doesn't seem to hurt, and it doesn't take much to bump the lubricity WAY up. 2stroke oil works, too, but is MUCH more expensive. Probably doesn't make too much difference, but it makes ME feel a little better!
![]() Heh heh, love the efficiency! I only get about 18-19 in my Dodge (sorry guys), but that's on six 35's and I meet skepticism regularly! Even with prices on diesel higher, you STILL are better off for the approximately 50% increase in fuel economy afforded by the diesel engine. Congratulations, you are gonna love that truck. Stuff will break/wear out, but those mechanical IDI's seem last forever if you take care of them. Oh, and a popular mod is to toss the glow plug controller for a switch so they don't constantly cycle 'till the engine warms up. The toggle glow setup makes the plugs last a lot longer, and in turn makes your $tarter last longer if the plugs crap out! Smokes a bit more 'till it's warm, though. |
