Smile New Member Needs Your Help!!!

Hello everybody, i just registered here recently and have been reading up on all the great info available here...

I am hoping I can get some answers to several questions I have regarding my truck...

I purchased a 1987 Ford F-350 Wrecker, that originally came with a 6.9l diesel.

I was informed that the 6.9l was replaced with a 7.3l non-turbo.

Is there any way i can identify the particular engine I have in this truck?
If so where & what do I look for?
Also, how do I tell what year it is?

Heres a few pics of what im workin on...

Many thanks in advance...

Hey man, go to this site and type in your VIN. It should tell you a decent amount about your truck.

where on the engine would i find the vin number or any other markings that might help me identify the size and year of it?

i tried that vin decoder but it didn't really tell me anything i didn't already know except where it was assembled. remember this engine was replaced with another but i have no documentation on what the original engine was replaced with.

if anyone can help me figure this out i would really appreciate it.

i need to find a service manual for this engine and would like to get the right one the first time.

thnx,
matt

I am positive that is a 6.9 by looking at the fuel filter. The 7.3 filters had a water seperator on the bottom of it and that one looked like it did not have anything( I could be wrong if I am seeing the picture wrong). There should be a tag on the pass. side valve cover, it will tell manufacture date down to the month, and the horse power rating. If it was a Reman. engine it will say that too. It will also tell if it is a 6.9 or a 7.3 on the tag.You can get a manual on E-Bay for it. The 6.9 is basicly the same as the 7.3, except for the fuel filter, and water seperator. They both hold ten quarts of oil. They do have diff. glow-plugs and glow-plug relays, I personaly have had way less problems with the 6.9 system. They are both good engines, 6.9 had a little weaker heads, main thing with these is to keep a clean air filter or they will start sucking oil and blow your engine, we had this happen. Good luck and if I can help in any way let me know.
