IDI Turbo or not
First of all, I'm a newbie. I have a 1994 E350 bus. I know the DI Turbo came out in late 94. Was there an IDI Turbo that preceded the DI and if so, what's the easiest way to determine if I have a non-turbo, IDI Turbo or a DI Turbo. The Ford book that came with it says it's a Powerstroke Turbo but I sure don't see anything turbo-like. I've attached a picture under the inside engine cover (doghouse?).
Thanks |

your picture is a IDI non turbo. I'm not sure if the E series had the turbo mounted in a different place due to space issues though. If your exhaust manifolds go straight to the exhaust system, then there is no turbo. Hope this helps

For sure that is an IDI non turbo 7.3, I can see where the air filter sits( I hope it was you that took it off before the pic. because it is missing). I don't think Ford put the IDI turbo in the vans, just went straight to the DI.

Thanks for the reply
Exactly how big is a turbo and what does it look like. I guess the key is the exhaust manifold. If it comes right off the engine and is a straight pipe out the back, there's no turbo, right?

BTW, I did take the air cleaner off. Thanks.

correct! If theres a turbo, the exhaust from the manifold will run through the turbo. Turbos look like a rusty horn where the exhaust will go in and a clean aluminum horn next to it where filtered air comes from the air cleaner.
