smokeing 89 7.3

my 89 f250 with a none turbo 7.3l is smoking. 6 months ago ,before it started smoking, i put in all new injectors. just put a new rebuilt injection pump in it last week and it smokes more than it did before the new pump. its not bad but when going up a hill it blows black smoke. other wise it runs good. could this be a timing issue? i lined up the mark on the pump with the mark on the mount pretty carefully.a friend said he thought the pump was set too "rich". can i adjust it myself? thanks
