I was told that if you disconnect your battery(s) while it's running and it stays running your alternator is working, if it dies, it isn't. When I was getting the battery light on my '01 recently I was pretty sure it was the alternator. I pulled the (+) side cables. It kept running on one battery. As soon as I pulled the second one, it died. I also had it checked at the parts place - They confirmed it as bad. New has been working fine.
If you can, check the voltage coming to the batteries. Also check the wire coming off the back of the alternator. |

Ya it reads 11.52 but my grampa said he changed his voltage regulator but couldn't remember what wire went where so the 3 or4 wires that plug into it so he guessed now I'm trying to guess it back before I assume the new alt or new bat are the problem or if I got a bad regulator any help the wires are colored if someone could tell me what colors they have starting from one side I can narrow down the fact it's not the wiring

Could be wrong but if its running it should be 14 volts and off the battery should be 12 if its 12 running you need a new alternator
