Help...Brother just blew up his 7.3 1988F350

Does anyone know of somewhere we can replace the 7.3 out of a 1988 F350....motor is blown and we need a replacement. Can you put a newer gen turbo 7.3 in the truck or would that be a waste

Any help, let me know so I can help him get this old motor out and a new one in.....
thanks

I tried to put a 99 in an 89, it can be done, but its a huge job. I ended up just buying a remaned long block. You would need to moddify some of the electronics, and the flywheel on the newer engine is a 13 in. instead of the 11 or 12 used on the older models. may have a problem with a torque converter too. the crankshaft hub on the old engine is a 9 bolt, on the newer engines it is a 10 bolt.

the input shaft on a ZF 5 is also smaller than the shaft on a ZF 6 so you may need to mahine the shaft or change the tranny if its a standard

good luck

You will be better off sticking with the IDI if all you want is a replacement. Several things are different between the blocks, and the heads will not work at all. If you want to upgrade to a PSD, it will bolt in, but many things will have to be changed. You would want an entire parts truck to rob.
