temp gauge inop

I just purchased a 94 e350 w/7.3 IDI engine. My temp gauge is not working. Can someone point me in the right direction? Where does the gauge pick up its reading from? Is there a way to test the gauge itself?

the sending unit for the gauge is screwed into the top of the water pump, unplug it and ground it to the engine , see if the gauge mioves , may have to cycle the key , then leave it disconnected to see if it moves , if the gauge doesnt do anything , your gauge is bad , if im not mistaken , its a red and white wire, whe n you ground it the gauge should top out

Thanks! I will try this. I hate driving anything w/o a temp gauge but especially an old diesel.
