F-series 7.3 IDI compatible to E-series?

Have a '92 E350 with a bad headgasket 7.3 IDI. Am wanting to replace this with a used 7.3 IDI, but there are presently a LOT more F engines than E engines available here in Cali.

Today's newbie question: I have heard that van and truck engines are not interchangeable. OK, guys: is this true?

Can I get a truck engine, strip it down to a long block, and install the different oil cooler, etc. to install it into my E?

Thanks for your help!

Yes only the outside accesory pieces won't work. Oil cooler, fuel filter housing, ect will all need to be swapped for E series parts. After that it will go in.

Glad to hear. Thanks much, Justin.

Between engine and trans (see new thread), I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I don't want to give up on this fairly rare beast-of-a-van.
