Blow by

I am looking at a 92 f250 7.3 it is kicking oil all over the motor to the point it is even on the side of the hood it seems to run ok. It needs two new batteries and a set of glow plugs. the person selling it called it blow by but I alway thought blow by was smoke in the valve covers it the head gasket was worn out. on gas engines. I only desels I have ever owned was a 83 mercedes 300sd so Can some one give me a working def of "Blow By" and what causes it. Since this is not a power stroke its a 92 supercab what else should I look at on this think. I know they have a problem with transmissions but other than that. Also what should I do to help lenghten the life of the trans other than not overheating it and changing the fluid. thank you so much!!!

blow by in a diesel is most of the time referred to as crankcase pressure , same thing though , if the truck you are lookin at has high crankcase pressure more than likely it nees a rebuild , rings are probably shot , unles you can buy it dirt cheap and want to spend a couple thousand , these engine are usually good engines , if its worn that bad someone probably hasnt taken care of it ,glow plugs and relays on 7.3 idi are very common problems and even when they are working right most idi are still hard to start cold , injection pumps go out from time to time , can be a little expensive , not a major problem though , i have a 1990 extended cab with 220,000 miles on it and i havent had very few problems , but if this this one is worn that bad ,its up to you
