Speedo cable or VSS or more?

Hey everyone.

So Put a new Injector pump on my truck because it leaked like hell. The problem I had started before I changed the pump though. Anyways the trans is shifting either too late or early. Also hard shift. I did not do the voltage on the throttle position sensor but have done quite a few adjustments since i put the pump in and have had it in all ranges with no help.

Here are some details:
-1990 f250 4x4 7.3 diesel e40d trans
-No overdrive flashing
-new tach sensor few months back
- above 65 speedo floats from 65 to 70 back and forth
-something also makes a winding noise (like bad speedos ive heard before) above 65 also
- hard shifts

So i think i need a speedo cable and a vss. Is the vss in the rear diff or out the side of the transfer case? I was under the truck and there is a sensor in the rear end and also in the end of the case.

Also does anyone know where the hookup is for the computer. I looked everywhere and have no luck.

Thanks

Update

So i changed both speed sensors just in case. One is located on top of the rear diff, and the other is located in the back of the transfercase. They were only like 15 and 20 dollars, but they fixed the problem. I guess 20 year old sensors have to crap out sooner or later. Hope this can help someone out in the future.

Working on a 1993 7.3L IDI, and the tach will not go over 1500, and the OD light is flashing, do you think if i replaced the faulty tach sensor the OD light will stop flashing? also do you know where the trans speed sensor is on a 2 wheel drive? i looked all over and could not see it. found the one on the rear dif...

First thing I would do is pull the error codes to see why the OD light is flashing. The RPM sensor is located in the engine compartment by the oil fill neck. It's a nut with two wires coming out of it. Cost ~$80 at the dealership here in Knoxville

Yea it sound like it would help. Mine sensor caused no rps till engine was reved till 1000 and then it was really slow. New one fixed it. On my 90 i still have a cable driven spedo so the sensor is in the back of the transfercase. With a 2wd on a older C6 trans it is off the driver side almost at the back of the trans. It could be possible that the 93 did not use a cable anymore. Otherwise the sensor in the rear diff is for the abs but is only about 12 bucks so its cheap and easy to change. Hope this helps
