You are probably feeling the difference between your converter being locked and unlocked.

The constant up and downshifting if this is truely it sounds bad. As for the converter locking up, it is perfectly normal especially when downshifting. The way to tell if the converter is locked up is the tach will lock in position whether or not your are giving it gas. When the converter isnt locked up, it acts like a rubber band(only example I can think of guys.) It allows the motor to rev up without directly locking it to the tranny, kinda like letting the clutch slip in a manual tranny. When the converter locks up, its just like a manual tranny being in gear, in that its a solid connection between the motor and tires.

This sounds odd if its really shifting like this. Are u sure its not the governor kicking in? Someone probably needs to ride in the truck to further diagnose whats goin on.
