hey guys, i have a question about the trans operation, I have a 2WD '02 250, just got it about a week ago, and i notice when i start out from a dead stop that there seems to be a lag time between stepping on the pedal and the trans seeming to engage. havent really tried pounding it from a dead stop, this is just from at a light, pulling out into trafffic etc. is that normal?? i still have time on the 30 day 1k warranty from the dealer on this so if this isnt right i can take it to them and have them look at it, i havent yet because i want to make sure this is in fact an issue, also, my time is limited due to work schedule, (never know when i have off, an sometimes i dont) thanks for any input!! new to the site so not sure this is the right area for this kind of thread, also, how long should i wait for starting to drive once i have started her up and also on shut down??, also will be switching to AMSOIL soon, the las time i had diesels was in the '80's so alot has changed for me with these, both of mine in the past were manual trans and no turbo

Yeh, wrong forum but not a big deal. I can get that fixed for you. Ok, I need more info about how your truck "lags" whe pulling into traffic. Are you sure it's not turbo lag? Like you hit the go pedal moderatly and AFTER 1800 RPM's it really moves but before that it's mediocre? A problem with the trans I'd see as being increased RPM's and then no go. How long to let it warm up? Well depends really. You can start her up and basically drive her right away, just make sure you keep it under 2 grand. It is actually better to warm these trucks up under a load like driving then it is to let it idle since idling produces low egt's and fuel wash and that cools the cylinders down to around or under 300degree's. Also, on a cold morning you don't want the power of a warm PSD running through your cold trans and rear you know? So unless it's like -10 outside, I say start it, idle a few moments get your coffee and turn the heat on and roll. Without an EGT gauge you never really know when to turn the truck off. A good rule of thumb is about a minute of slow driving (like entering a neighborhood) should bring your EGT's down, and when you get home park it, get your stuff together, get out and THEN turn the truck off. IF you had a gauge, you need to wait until you motor is below 400 degree's. |

ok, thanks, for the info, to give you more info on the trans issue, i am talking like starting from a dead stop, and not nailing the pedal, there seems sometimes to be a lag between that and the trans engaging, could this be due to the fact that just sitting the engine has so much torque compared to a gasser? and i do understand this trans has a "lock up" converter for direct power. it just seems to me to be too much of a lag between, its like a second or so, but then there is this bit of a jerk when it engages, ive never encountered a situation like that, i did however; at the recommending of another poster, check the trans fluid, and while the engine what at op temp, it was registering cold, so i added just over a pint, to bring it up to the middle of the hash mark for hot, and it performs better overall, but still has that lag when starting out, my issue is, when starting from a stop and at very low rpms, (like i said not nailing the pedal) normal traffic conditions or pulling out of my parking spot on the street thanks, and btw the info on idle helps as well, i do let it idle for about maybe a minute before starting, but i have a street that i pull out of that i could drive down that would do the warm up nicely, as for shutdown, no i dont have an egt guage, but i do let it idle for about 1-2minutes before shut down, and thats after the slow driving from entering my street.

When you said "jerks" right after lag, that indicates a trans problem. Sounds like low line pressure from trans pump at idle. This can actually be checked with a 300lb guage. Right above and forward of the linkage that enters the trans is a port (1/8 pipe plug) that the guage is screwed into. You should have 55 to 65 lbs at idle. Any lower than that and you'v got problems.
