Tranny Delay

2002 7.3 Dually Auto has a delay when starting out cold. The transmission appears to freewheel for about 2 minutes when starting out cold. Selecting between Drive and Reverse seems to speed the process up. This started after backing up a hill and overheating transmission. Ford dealer in Hershey, PA replaced torque converter under warranty; however, delay continues.

Low fluid would be my first guess. It's amazeing how many different problems are caused be low fluid. Preston

Tranny Delay

Towed from Waxhaw, NC to Dallas, TX. Tranny began burping fluid. In TN, added fluid. Tranny would downshift on hillclimbs to nothing. Got to test overrev limits on the Powerstroke. Ford refused to replace the tranny on my expensive extended warranty so I had an expensive ATS transmission, torque converter and transmission Co-Pilot Controller installed in Ft Worth. The Co-Pilot Controller allows you to control the torque converter lockup.

The dipstick on all e4od's, '89 to '97 were too long. This meant actual fluid level was over an inch too low when showeing full on the stick. In '98 they finally corrected the stick length but not enough. Pre '97 level should be 1 1/2 above the full mark, '98 up should be 1/2 inch above full mark.
What is too full?. With engine running, fluid level should not come in contact with any spinning part. Most transmissions have about 2 inches of clearance between fluid and moveing parts so you have room to add more. Too much fluid will not "blow a seal", it will simply come out the vent makeing you think you've blown a seal. When it gets below spinning parts, it will stop leaking out the vent.

Torque converter lockup device is...

...a good thing. Has anybody else added one of these to their truck? My '00 Excursion needs coaxing to over 40mph and 2000 rpm before it'll shift into fourth, and I'd like to get it shifted at a lower speed (because we don't get over 40 very often around here).
Will the lock-up mod work in this case? This is a no-load situation mostly, unless hauling the boat (in which case I don't think I should use it anyway?)
