Question Tranny or Electrical Problem? Need Input Please

OK, here's the situation: DH has a 2002 F-350 CrewCab long bed w/ 7.3 P/S Diesel with a "SuperChip", auto transmission. 143,000 miles-some pulling a 30' 5th wheel and also a large gooseneck equipment trailer with heavy stuff on it sometimes. A month or so ago, he started noticing a "gear-grinding" noise during the shift when he would "romp" on the gas pedal. He took it in and had the transmission rebuilt 12 days ago. Still making the noise--only less noisy. (This noise has only happened about 10 times before rebuild, once since rebuild and again, it is not as "Intense".) Took it back to tranny shop. The tranny guy got the same code as my DH did (he has a scanner). It is P1670. Tranny guy is scratching head. DH is wondering what the heck is going on-wondering what to do next. Any suggestions? Anything else to look at? BTW, I think this truck was made in Canada but not sure.

I don't know about that code but the grinding would likely be the overdrive planet carrier. It's aluminum and a known week link, pulling like that it needs a steel upgrade in it.

od planet in an '02 is already steel.
If he told the trans shop about the noise before the o'haul, it is now the trans shop's headache.

sounds to me that it could be the torqe converter came apart internally. and that code can be set from having the chip installed. if i remember right the code is electronic feedback signal not detected. that wouldnt have anything to do with the transmission making noises, usually that code will keep the truck from starting or hard to start something along thos lines.

I have an 02 4R100 sitting in peaces in my shop right now and the O/D is a 4 planet aluminum junker. It's the only 02 I have been inside of but about the only steel in it is in the form of cheep stamped steel.

You bet it needs to go back! Don't matter what it is, it should have been fixed in the rebuild.

Could be the converter like "matthewy8" said but if that is true then they left a junk converter full of crap tied to a rebuilt trans. Not smart!
