01 problem after shifting into reverse
I have a 01 F-350 PSD, crew cab 4X4. Just wondering if anyone has a problem when shifting into reverse the engine sounds likes its under a heavy load, but as soon as I give it some gas it run fine. It’s not an every day problem maybe 2 times a month. The truck has 52000 miles and has been service regularly. If anyone has any ideas what it may be, it will be a big help. Thanks from North Carolina.

Sometimes (maybe a couple times in the past 3-4 months), especially after it's hot and lately after I've been towing my 5-er, I'll put it into reverse and I have no power. The truck sounds funny for a few seconds, no power, then snaps out of it and all is fine. I'll keep reading the other threads, but if you have an idea of what this is, lemme know! Thanks.

Guys, I am having a similiar problem. I have an '01 F350 PSD with 131,000 and when I put mine in reverse I don't have any power. It's like it's trying to run in to high of a gear. I haven't had any luck with resolving the issue. I have noticed that when I set my programmer to a higher power level that reverse gets better. Keep me posted and I will do the same if i find something out.

It's now happening more frequently. Temps have been well over 100 degrees where I've been lately, including home...and when I put it into reverse, I get the "no power" problem for a few secs and then it's ok. It's like the trans is searching to find the gear, finds it, then I back up. Or like it's trying to start out in 4th gear, instead of 1st. It moves, but no power. About a 2-4 second delay. Doesn't happen when it's cold, just after running for some time and the truck is hot. Tranny gauge is normal. I have a very good aftermarket gauge/sensor installed... I'm starting to wonder if I should just wait it out, get as many miles out of this stock tranny as I can, then go for the big investment in one of the recommended after-market trannies guys are talking about on this site...that's what Marc suggested to me and I think it's a good plan. I was going to go for the torque converter and shift kit sooner, but that's not making much sense if I do the complete replacement down the road. What do y'all think? Any more problems? Any new ideas? Greg |

Don't want to unnecessarily alarm you but.....
I know what I would do for peace of mind.... If the transmission fluid was at all discoloured or smelt a little burnt????? I would drop the transmission pan and have a look for debris in the filter or bottom of the pan... Mind you mine was an older one than my current 2003, but my 93 F-350 with the E4OD transmission burned the reverse clutch pack out. Without me knowing they plugged up the transmission cooler with debris somehow, and filter, and the transmission munched itself in short order... I am smarter now on those transmissions having built another with a heavy duty towing pack, and had another spare besides that I played with as Ford was not in Australia at the time and spare trannys were VERY scarce.... Anyways, if the transmission fluid is discoloured, or does not smell sweet, I would want to know what the filter was like and if anything was in the pan. The Reverse clutch packs were the weakest in previous model...! Regards, Lone Ranger in Oz... |

I wanted to give y'all a quick update after my vacation to Oregon. Towed the 5th wheel and the truck did pretty well - about 1200 miles in all, and much of it big mountain/hot climbs. Earlier in our trip, I had some loss of power at higher altitudes after towing all day (cruising around 50MPH, cruise control just pops off and the truck starts to struggle on a long, steady climb), check engine light came on, so later we made it to camp and I pulled the codes off with my programmer. One code was the usual waste gate error code I get all the time, and we've decided it's nothing to worry about. The other 2 codes were not even Ford codes, per Marc and another forum buddy (thanks guys!) - and HyperTech called them "false codes." Whatever - I changed out my fuel filter, just in case (been running biodiesel off and on...), and my truck did great the rest of the trip. But...the "no power in reverse" problem did get worse. 50-75% of the time, when the truck had been running and hot, and/or pulling my 5th wheel - I get the no power in reverse problem for 5-10 seconds (longer than before). I used 4wd backing up my 5th wheel, and that worked fine. But, it has progressed the wrong way. I guess at this point you just let it do its thing, and when the whole tranny goes, I have to suck it up and go for one of the spendy aftermarket $$ trannies, if I keep the truck...I'm thinking about a PSD dually if we end up moving to Oregon next year. Any other comments/ideas out there? Thanks. Greg |

Your comments sound just like my experience, and yes the reverse clutches are the weakest in the last series of transmissions before yours, the E4OD that I had. Wish I had not sold my last built up Super Truck.. Oh well, have to build up another Dually 4x4 Crew Cab when I can find one here in Oz... But that is another story.. Look, check your fluid and look for debris in your pan and filter. If it is brownish and thin muck on the bottom better be planning a transmission job when you can pick the timing. Mine happened at the worst time possible, God's sense of humour, Murphy's law or something like that. But if you know it is coming, it is a lot easier to pick the time than to have it pick you at the WRONG time... OK? Just some advice from the lone Ranger in Oz... "Been there and done that".. If pan and filter are clean, and oil clean, then look to valve bodies in the control section of the transmission. It might be something simple to fix there... If you are lucky and it is not clutch packs... Good luck.. My guess, but I have built a few Ford Transmissions for severe duty... |
