Auto trans $$$

The Ford service dept. quoted me $3900 to replace my transmission!!! ...02 250 automatic (dont know wich one it is, just know it has the pto).
Is this unusual? Could I buy a used tranny and install it myself?? I am not a mechanic but have done my share of engine and tranny swaps, Just not in a diesel. I dont have that kind of money to dump into a new trans...

Thanks for the responce Marc. I just hate feeling like their telling me to grab my ankles. I'll have another estimate tomorrow from another shop.
For that kind of money I think I can buy the trans and put it in myself... I dunno... just a little frustrated.

Thats the way I'm leaning. Especially now that I found this kick a$$ forum. I'll just have to read up on these "sturdier guts" you speak of.

Hey 99 Smokin, Lone Ranger in Oz here. My Partner just got a new Dodge Cummins 4x4. Are you still amongst the "Faithful Followers" of the PSD, now that you have a Cummins? Or is there some other reason you have the Cummins like it was given to you as a work truck? Or is it just better....?
Not that they are readily available here. He waited over a year to get his shipped in and converted to Right Hand Drive, so long that he ended up paying for a getting the next years model..

Anyway there 99Smokin, might just catch hell on this Forum, but why the Dodge and is it betterrrrrrrrr

I'm not really a faithful follower of any brand or engine maker, as long as it's got a diesel engine under the hood. I just felt like trying a Cummins this time around. So far i'm very impressed with every other than the fuel system. The only pump that can deliver what a lot of guys want is the p7100 pump on the 94-98 12v trucks. After that it was the vp44, and now the cp3....and they just don't do the deed. My powerstroke never had any fuel delivery issues....the fuel was always there. The downfall on the powerstroke for me was it didn't have the torque I can get out of my cummins. So far I wouldn't say one is better than the other.

99Smokin,
I have heard Allison Transmission... That true? The weak link in the PSD trucks seems to be the transmission without a doubt. Allison would be hard to kill from what I am told, or is this just a "grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" think...? Other than that, I do like the look of my Ford... Mean Machine feel, and the sound is good from a free flowing exhaust.
So what do you think... Allison rules? Ranger

Allison has a good tranny. From what I have been told the Torqshift trannies behind the 6.0's are actually made by Allison. I don't think the 7.3 trannies are all that bad, at least the 99 ups......mine took all the abuse I threw at it and then some.
