6 Speed Manual Trans

I just bought an '01 F350 supposedly bone stock but just had a new clutch put in. In both 1st and 2nd gear at low speed there is a lot of gear rattle from the transmission. Is this normal for the 6 speeds? Oh, truck has 165K on it. (My previous experience is only with diesels and automatics.)

Yes, your marble analogy is pretty good. It's only at low motor rpm, goes away above maybe 16 - 1700 rpm.

it could be a lot of things then. the imput shaft bearing could be going, a syncro could be a little sloppy, or the throughout bearing could be grumbling.

when you had the trans out for the clutch, did you replace the pilot bearing and throughout bearing???

did the imput shaft have any signs of scarring were it rides in the pilot bearing???

have you tried servicing the fluid to see if that will make it quieter??

New throughout bearing, don't know about the pilot bearing but I suspect not. I will certainly try the fluid service. thanks.

Also, ZF trannys are notorious for noise, being that you're used to autos you could be a little more sensitive to driveline noise. Keep an eye out for any metal shavings/particles when you service the fluid, if it's clean I wouldn't think much more of it. Was the clutch professionally installed? If it was I would think they'd replace the pilot bearing.

Thanks. I'll do a fluid change next week and keep a close eye on what comes out.
